Understanding Crowd Behavior: Important Business Continuity Plan Component

In a recent report released by Leeds University and published by the U.K. Civil Contingencies Secretariat, we are given a  great incite for helping our business continuity managers making plans for event managment situations.

The guidance provided in this report is given in five sections with the following emphasis: (1) a summary of the substantive research reports, (2) a comprehensive set of good practice guidelines for crowd events and management in emergency situations, (3) a statement of the literature behind the good practice guidelines, (4) a detailed review of some of the existing crowd behavior simulation tools currently available, and (5) references for the basis and sources of literature behind the stated guidelines and lessons in this report.

This most interesting and most often overlooked component in each of our organization’s business continuity plans deserves your attention.

Let us know if you found the information in this report to be helpful in your  business continuity planning efforts.

ICD-10 and HIPAA 5010 could be the Y2K of the Healthcare Industry

The U.S. healthcare industry is facing one of its biggest challenges in decades.  The new HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 regulations have a target date for compliance by Jan 2012 and Oct 2013 respectively.  To comply, processes and IT systems will need to be aligned with the new regulation requirements and of course much training and retraining will have to be given to people responsible for the implementation of these new regulations to ensure not only business continuity but to also maintain the privacy rights of everyone involved so that penalties can be avoided.

    Read more about these changes.

Previous Business Continuity Management Report Still a Valuable Resource

Only three months ago,  a report resulting from research by the Chartered Management Institute was released to the general public.  The report was authored by Patrick Woodman and Dr. Vidal Kumar.  Against the backdrop of continued threats to business disruptions , there remains a strong need for business continuity planning and strategies in today’s organizations.

Having overlooked an earlier  recommendation from our blog to read this important report, we were recently reminded of it from several emails sent to our attention on this topic.  We would like to argue that while this report was conducted in the U.K for and within the U.K. market, it still is good reading by and relevant to U.S. companies.

Please consider adding this report to your library of resources dealing with the topic of Business Continuity Management.
